The Federal Trade Commission recently obtained a court order to halt an Aurora, Illinois debt collection scam. The debt collection agency, located in a western suburb of Chicago, was using intimidation tactics to trick consumers to pay loan debts they either did not owe, or did not owe to that particular company. Sometimes, the bad guys are just asking for it. The FTC has shut down FTC Credit Solutions, a credit repair company that attempted to deceive consumers by implying an affiliation with the FTC. [3/30/15]

The CFPB released its fourth annual report summarizing activities to administer the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). The 70 page report highlights joint efforts of the CFPB and the FTC during 2014 related to complaints submitted, enforcement actions, rule making, and educational efforts taken and planned. The FTC has some significant concerns about the draft data security bill released by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. A representative from the FTC stated that the bill is not broad enough and doesn’t provide the agency with authority to draft rules or to update security requirements as needs and technology changes; the authority that the FCC currently has. Two car title lenders, First American Title Lending of Georgia, LLC, and Finance Select, Inc., were charged with deceptive advertising. Both companies advertised an interest rate of zero percent for a 30-day car title loan without disclosing important conditions. [2/2/15]
