- FDIC Delivers Blow to Operation Choke Point
Department of Justice's "Operation Choke Point," a controversial program to make access to the financial system difficult for certain businesses, has been dealt a blow by the FDIC, which has withdrawn a list of merchant categories that it said warranted heightened attention by banks. The list, including payday lenders, debt consolidation firms, pornography businesses and others, had been misinterpreted, resulting in banks severing ties with legitimate businesses in those industries, according to the FDIC. GreenChoice Bank, with 3 branches and $73 million in assets, became the 14th bank failure of 2014. Last year at this time, there were 16 bank failures. FDIC press release is here. [7/28/14]

- Matz Claims Proposed RBC Rule Would Have Saved NCUSIF $180 Million
In a letter to the House Financial Oversight Committee, NCUA Chair, Debbie Matz, claims that if the proposed risk-based capital rule had been in effect in 2007, it would have saved the NCUA Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) as much as $180 million. Matz added that the reason that some of the risk weightings are different in the proposed rule versus the FDIC rule is that the FDIC rule does not take into consideration concentration risk.
