- HUD Settles with NJ Mortgage Company on Disability Discrimination
A New Jersey mortgage company settled with the HUD for $104,000 over discriminatory lending practices against people with a medical disability. The company required, among other things, 69 disabled applicants to provide doctorâs notes or letters from the Social Security Administration that their disability income would continue for three years. [8/14/14]

- Where Has All the Paper Gone?
HUD has completed the required notice and comment processes for the FHA-insured multifamily rental closing documents, which has been reviewed and approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The intention behind the changes was to decrease and optimize the paperwork involved in related activities. Final versions of the closing documents, with comparisons to previous versions, are available for review. [7/11/14]
- The Great Recession Is Receding
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of the Treasury released the June edition of the Obama Administration's Housing Scorecard Thursday.  The most recent data show progress with regards to key factors including growing equity and a rebound in the sale of new and existing homes. Although the scorecard indicates progress, officials warn that much more needs to be done to fully recover from the Great Recession. [7/11/14]
- Proposed Legislation to Replace Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
The Partnership to Strengthen Homeownership Act was proposed on Thursday. This act would wind down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac over a five-year period, replacing them with an insurance program from Ginnie Mae which would then be its own entity, no longer under the jurisdiction of the HUD. [7/11/14]

Julián Castro was voted in and confirmed Wednesday as the new secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It is still unclear what approach he will take concerning issues like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. [7/10/14]
- Maternity Leave Part 2: HUD Announces Another Fine
Following last week's announcement of a settlement with a credit union for denying a mortgage because one of the applicants was on maternity leave, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development settles another claim with a California-based mortgage lender for denying or delaying mortgage loans to women because they were on maternity leave. - No Children Allowed: HUD’s Antidiscrimination Crackdown Continues
Department settles with group stemming from allegations they advertised a condominium complex as a place where children were not allowed to live, a violation of the Fair Housing Act. Worth noting that the action was the result of a referral from another group that receives funding from HUD to serve as watchdogs for discrimination. [6/30/14]
- Mountain America Settles Mortgage Maternity Discrimination Claim
Mountain America Credit Union has agreed to pay $25,000 to settle a claim brought by HUD for allegations that the credit union had violated the Fair Housing Act. The claim began with a complaint by a married couple who claimed that their mortgage application had been denied because the wife was out on maternity leave. The credit union stated that its investigation showed that the credit union had never had engaged in any discriminatory practice, but both the credit union and HUD decided it was best to enter into a conciliation agreement.
